From Redundancy to Finding a New Lease of Life

Futures supported Waitrose staff through a difficult time in their career.

For many people faced with the task of finding a new job, seeking a career change or moving into a completely new phase of life through retirement, it can feel daunting. The workshops delivered were aimed at providing the Waitrose staff with the knowledge, skills, confidence and motivation to make a successful transition to the next stage of their lives.

Careers adviser Sally delivered both of the 3 hour workshops to more than 50 members of staff, “Having worked at Waitrose for the past 35 years I was worried about finding a job outside the partnership and how my age may affect my future. My confidence and prospects have definitely improved. I have a much better idea on where I’m heading and how to get there.” Adrian, an ex-Waitrose staff member

The Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire team also joined forces with TCHC, a training provider who offer funded qualifications for those facing redundancy. 32 of the 50 have now started a Level 2 Certificate in IT User Skills course, with several of the learners receiving new job offers since training.

“The advice and support provided by Sally enabled me to have faith in myself, my abilities and my skills. She made me feel so much more motivated and positive to find alternative employment. Nothing was too much trouble for her and she was on hand by phone and email when she wasn’t delivering in the branch. I got a new job as a Sales Assistant working at Debenhams in Stevenage, which I’m really delighted about. I’ve also started an IT training course with TCHC that was organised by the National Careers Service.” Kim, an ex-Waitrose staff member
