We're using National Careers Week as an opportunity to share with you a week in the life of a Careers Leader during one of the busiest times of year.

National Careers Week is an opportunity for schools and businesses to showcase the world of work to learners in schools and colleges. Their website is filled with resources to inspire students.

Futures, in collaboration with the Careers and Enterprise Company, is working to support local schools and colleges with their careers programmes.

During National Careers Week, in schools around the country, Careers Leaders are putting on special events and talks to inspire students. This means that the programme in each school looks very different.

Here’s the diary of one of our local hard-working Careers Leaders that we work with.

Monday 24th February

We started National Careers and Science Week early! I hosted a STEM roadshow at my new school today for years 7 and 8.

Monday 2nd March

It’s officially National Careers Week and for all students there are tutor group activities organised for the week and there are some house assemblies covering: the skills employers look for, Civil Service careers, creativity and the world of work, careers in events and hospitality and finally a session on how careers in sport can lead to other jobs which will be led by an ex-footballer and his business partner.

I’m starting the programme at my new school by hosting a university talk to Year 9 and 10 students who are studying GCSE and BTEC PE, about where a Sport Degree can take you. I’ve also arranged a talk from an NHS gastro surgeon for the triple science students.

Tuesday 3rd March

An ex-student from the school is coming in to share his fantastic career journey; he's now working for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

At the other school I work in I’ve arranged for the Marines to come and work with Year 8 and 9 PE students on developing skills through STEM activities.

Wednesday 4th March

I’ve arranged for a History Academic from Aston University to come in and talk to A Level History students about possible career paths.

Thursday 5th March

The tutor programme and assemblies programme continues.

Friday 6th March

Boots are running a sixth form assembly about early careers and I’m leading a group of sixth formers on a Business Trip/Challenge Day at Michael Page Recruitment, which is part of our partnership with Enabling Enterprise, so this trip will have a big focus on skills.

I’m also preparing a Ready Steady Cook competition with Navy Chefs for next week as well as a STEM week including an Enabling Enterprise Challenge on Monday, a step into STEM event on Tuesday, Big Bang Fair visit on Wednesday, Desert Rats Challenge Day on Thursday and Learn By Design Energy Quest on Friday!
